What is Dyspraxia?: Dyspraxia, or Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), affects motor skills and coordination. It can make tasks like writing, tying shoes, or sports challenging, even though the individual’s intelligence is unaffected.
Symptoms: Common signs include difficulty with fine motor tasks (e.g., using utensils, handwriting) and gross motor tasks (e.g., running, balance). Teens may also struggle with planning, organisation, and following multi-step instructions.
Supporting Your Teen: Be patient and understanding. Offer help with organising tasks and breaking them down into manageable steps. Encourage physical activities that are fun and build confidence.
Impact on Anxiety: Dyspraxia can lead to anxiety, particularly in social situations or school. Teens may feel self-conscious about their coordination or struggle with tasks that others find easy.
Seeking Help: Developing movement confidence is vital. Understand the work that movement professionals such as the Movement School, the Running School are doing to help. Occupational therapy can also help with primary reflex and sensory integration.
